Every Christian is called to be an ambassador for Christ, to be a disciple, and to disciple others. But some are called by God to go further and organize new churches.
The Bible describes a missionary as one who is called by the Holy Ghost and sent by the authority of a local church. Acts 13:2-3 describes the sending of two missionaries from the church at Antioch saying, “As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.”
This is the practice of the early church in fulfilling the great commission recorded in Matthew 28:18-20, which says, “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
